Description
The flowers of Leycesteria formosa look like long earrings! The color is purple with white bracts appearing in July-September.
After flowering, Leycesteria formosa forms blue to black berries, which makes the plant extra attractive.
Ultimately, Leycesteria formosa grows to a height of about 100 to 140 cm and is therefore also suitable for use in smaller gardens. The plant likes a sunny spot, but light shade is also tolerated. The soil must be well permeable to water.
Maintenance, Leycesteria formosa does not require special care.
The plant flowers on the young wood and can be pruned back deeply in the spring: the oldest branches are cut off at the ground, the younger ones are cut just above an outer bud at about a third.
The plant is also highly valued by birds, including pheasants. As a result, the plant is also known under the names caramel berry and pheasant berry. The branches are hollow and resemble reed somewhat. They reach a height of one and a half to two meters and then hang gracefully. The shrub originates from the Himalayan region and is named in its Latin name after an English judge in Bangladesh. Formosa does not refer to the old name of Taiwan, but is Latin for beautifully formed.
